"Artists Statement 2010"
“The current series of snow paintings began last year 2009, when we had a heavy snowfall - an unusual event down here on the Dingle Peninsula. While the mountaintops are often white in winter, to have snow down to the sea has not happened since I was a child. It didn't last long, I did a small number of drawings and paintings and then put them aside. The snow in January revived my interest in the theme and I found it suited a method of drawing I have been using for the past while - black and white on paper using a brush. Luckily the days following the snowfall were calm with brilliant sunshine, which is why the imagery has a clarity and lightness, and instead of an oppressive coldness the subtle play of light and shadow was something that immediately suggested itself to me. And because the mountains and sea are so close together the uniformity of colour made the compositions easier than usual to realize. I have really enjoyed working on these pictures - especially at a time of year, which is often dull, wet and windy in Kerry and at times a struggle to get the energy to put paint on canvas. I hope everyone who views the exhibition will enjoy these paintings”
